What is making this process easier and easier?
Simple. The internet. Now you can check rates in your spare time, any time of the day! No more pesky phone calls and being put on hold and having to try to negotiate. Plus if you think someone might decrease their price you can print off the online estimates and show them. Ask them to do better than that or you will switch.
