• 18 to 75 years old
• Has had asthma for at least one year
• Asthma is currently symptomatic
• Has experienced at least 2 asthma exacerbations within the past year

• Affects 300 million people of all races worldwide (7-10%; varies by country)
• Accounts for 2 million emergency department visits in U.S. each year
• In urban centers acute asthma may comprise up to 10% of all ED visits
• Around age 20, men and women are equally likely to have asthma. However, as women age they are more likely than men to have asthma
