Simple and free file encryption
Storing sensitive information is tricky business. Information stored on paper can get lost. Computer files can be stolen. That is why there are hardware safes and software encryption, respectively. The problem with both is that they aren't very portable. For example, you can't open most encrypted files on a different computer. That computer would need the same encryption program.
LockNote solves that issue. It is a basic text editor, like NotePad on Windows. But each created file has an embedded encryption program.
For example, you create a text file containing your Social Security number. When you save in LockNote, you will be prompted for a password. Then the file will be created.
You can transfer the file to any computer. Just double-click the file to open it as normal. You will be prompted for the password you created. Enter the password and your information is available. However, anyone without the password won't have access.
You can also copy and paste information into LockNote. Any text document can be transferred. This is helpful as LockNote wasn't designed as a word processor.
